The Obi of Onitsha, His Majesty Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe, has expressed heartfelt appreciation to Globacom for its unwavering support in promoting Nigeria's cultural heritage, particularly through the Ofala Festival. This commendation was made during the 2026 edition of the festival, which took place at Ime Obi in Onitsha, Anambra State.
Globacom has been the principal sponsor of the Ofala Festival for an impressive 15 years, a partnership that Igwe Achebe credits with transforming the festival from a local palace event into a globally recognized cultural celebration. He emphasized the significance of this long-term collaboration, stating that it has played a crucial role in enhancing the festival's profile and reach.
"Their partnership has transformed the festival from a palace ritual to a world-renowned cultural festival, which owes a great deal to purposeful partnership," Igwe Achebe remarked. He noted that Globacom's support has remained steadfast through both favorable and challenging times, allowing the community to maintain the authenticity of the Ofala while improving its presentation and documentation.
The monarch also extended his gratitude to Globacom's Chairman, Mike Adenuga Jr., for his vision and commitment to promoting Nigeria's rich cultural heritage. "I thank Globacom and its Chairman, Otunba (Dr.) Mike Adenuga Jr., GCON, a true man of culture, for his vision and belief that culture is not a luxury but a foundation for unity," he said.
This year's festival theme, "Igba Mbo, Iga N’Iru" — which translates to "Strive and Advance" — was highlighted by Igwe Achebe as an inspirational call for hard work, excellence, and collective advancement. He explained that the theme reflects the industrious spirit of Onitsha's ancestors, who built a thriving kingdom along the Niger River. The monarch urged the younger generation to honor this legacy through responsible leadership and purposeful enterprise.
In a goodwill message, Adenuga described the relationship between Globacom and the Ofala Festival as a cherished partnership that goes beyond mere corporate sponsorship. He expressed gratitude to Igwe Achebe and the Onitsha community for allowing the company to contribute to the preservation and celebration of their cultural heritage.
"Our association with the Ofala Festival since 2011 has been much more than a corporate partnership. It has been a relationship which we cherish deeply and regard as a privilege," Adenuga stated. He emphasized the satisfaction that comes from showcasing the beauty and dignity of Onitsha's traditions to audiences not only in Nigeria but across Africa and the world.
Globacom's ongoing sponsorship of the Ofala Festival underscores its commitment to cultural preservation and the promotion of indigenous traditions. The company views these efforts as essential for strengthening national identity, fostering unity, and projecting Nigeria's cultural wealth on the international stage.
As the festival continues to grow in prominence, the partnership between Globacom and the Ofala Festival serves as a model for how corporate involvement can positively impact cultural heritage and community identity. The recognition and support from leaders like Igwe Achebe and Adenuga highlight the importance of collaboration in celebrating and preserving Nigeria's rich cultural tapestry.
