In a significant operation against oil theft, the Nigerian Navy has discovered three underground reservoirs in Delta State, containing a total of 75,000 litres of suspected stolen crude oil. This crackdown is part of the Navy's ongoing efforts under Operation Delta Sentinel, aimed at combating the rampant illegal oil trade that has plagued the region.
The discoveries were made during two separate operations conducted on October 12 and October 14, 2026. The first operation, executed by the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Delta, led to the identification of approximately 30,000 litres of crude oil in one reservoir. The subsequent operation revealed an additional 45,000 litres stored in two larger reservoirs.
Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, the Director of Naval Information, stated that the reservoirs and their contents were managed according to established protocols. He emphasized the importance of these discoveries, noting that they expose hidden storage sites that facilitate the accumulation and distribution of stolen crude oil.
“The successive discoveries highlight the presence of concealed storage points that could facilitate the accumulation and onward movement of suspected stolen crude oil,” Captain Folorunsho remarked. He added that uncovering these stockpiles disrupts a crucial link in the illicit petroleum trade and diminishes opportunities for the unlawful exploitation of Nigeria's oil resources.
The Nigerian Navy has reiterated its commitment to conducting intelligence-led operations to identify and dismantle facilities that support oil theft and illegal refining activities. The overarching goal is to protect Nigeria's critical national assets and curb economic sabotage related to oil theft, which has significant implications for the country's revenue.
The operations come at a time when Nigeria is grappling with the economic impacts of oil theft, which has been a persistent issue affecting the nation's oil production and revenue generation. The Navy's intensified efforts aim to restore integrity to the oil sector and ensure that the nation's resources are utilized for the benefit of all Nigerians.
As the Navy continues its crackdown, it remains vigilant in its mission to safeguard the nation's petroleum resources, emphasizing the need for ongoing collaboration with other security agencies to effectively combat the challenges posed by oil thieves and illegal refiners. The recent discoveries serve as a reminder of the ongoing battle against oil theft in Nigeria and the importance of sustained efforts to protect the country's valuable resources.
