The Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) is intensifying efforts to promote Ebonyi State's diverse range of products, including rice, cassava, palm oil, processed foods, and solid minerals, for both domestic and international markets. During a recent exhibition held in Abakaliki, stakeholders gathered to address the challenges faced by local entrepreneurs in accessing global markets.
Despite the state’s rich agricultural resources, entrepreneurs in Ebonyi are hindered by several obstacles, including limited financial access, inadequate packaging, and difficulties in obtaining necessary quality certifications. These issues were at the forefront of discussions at the Made-in-Ebonyi Product Exhibition, which aimed to connect local producers with government officials and regulatory agencies.
Nonye Ayeni, the Executive Director of NEPC, emphasized the importance of enhancing the competitiveness of Ebonyi's products on the international stage. Represented by Okechukwu Amaechi, the Ebonyi State Coordinator, Ayeni noted that Nigeria's non-oil export sector achieved approximately $6.1 billion in export receipts in 2025, marking an 11.5 percent increase from the previous year. This growth presents a significant opportunity for states like Ebonyi to expand their roles in international trade.
Ayeni highlighted the need for quality, standardization, and consistent supply to access foreign markets effectively. She pointed out that adding value to agricultural products through processing and packaging could significantly increase earnings compared to selling raw commodities. This approach not only has the potential to generate foreign exchange but also to create jobs and empower women and young entrepreneurs.
In addition to Ayeni's remarks, Emeka Orajaka, Deputy Director of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), stressed the importance of regulatory compliance for businesses aiming to compete internationally. He outlined the essential steps for product registration, which include good manufacturing practices, proper labeling, and appropriate packaging. Orajaka warned that issues such as counterfeiting and food fraud could jeopardize public health and undermine trust in Nigerian products.
The exhibition also featured insights from Steve Odo, the Commissioner for Business Development in Ebonyi State, who reiterated the government's commitment to supporting local businesses. He acknowledged the challenges faced by small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and called for increased collaboration with agencies like NEPC and NAFDAC to facilitate the export process.
Ozoemena Njoku, president of the Coalition of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, expressed optimism about the exhibition's potential to help producers enhance their products and expand their market reach. He identified agricultural products, including rice and dairy, as having significant export potential but noted that many entrepreneurs lack the necessary knowledge and support to navigate the complexities of international trade.
The event underscored the need for sustained investment in various areas, including processing, packaging, quality assurance, and access to finance. For local businesses to thrive in the global market, it is crucial for producers to understand export documentation and establish reliable supply chains.
Ekuma Mojibade, Permanent Secretary of the Ebonyi State Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Business Development, highlighted ongoing government efforts to improve the capacity of entrepreneurs. She mentioned initiatives such as non-interest loan arrangements aimed at fostering sustainable business practices.
As NEPC and other agencies work to promote locally manufactured products, the success of these initiatives will depend on the ability of entrepreneurs to leverage the knowledge and resources available to them. By focusing on quality certification and compliance, Ebonyi State has the potential to significantly enhance its participation in the non-oil export sector, ultimately leading to job creation and improved economic outcomes for its residents.
