Akwa Ibom State has taken a significant step towards improving water transportation by acquiring two newly-built ferries designed to facilitate travel and trade between Oron, a key maritime hub, and Calabar in Cross River State. This initiative aims to transform the Oron maritime environment into a bustling center for transportation, commerce, and tourism.
Governor Umo Eno announced the acquisition during a press briefing in Uyo, the state capital, emphasizing that the project is not merely about constructing ferry terminals but involves comprehensive maritime infrastructure development. The governor highlighted plans for high-quality jetties and world-class services to enhance the overall experience for passengers and cargo transporters.
The newly acquired ferries measure 24 meters and 18 meters in length, with plans to eventually operate a total of four ferries along the Oron-Calabar route. This expansion is expected to streamline the movement of people and goods across the coastal corridor, thereby stimulating economic activity in the region.
Governor Eno articulated the broader objectives of the maritime project, which include repositioning Oron as a commercial zone that attracts private-sector investments, creates job opportunities, and promotes sustainable livelihoods through the effective use of the state's marine resources. He noted that the initiative is well-coordinated to support various sectors, including fisheries, fish processing, hospitality, and coastal tourism, while also enhancing maritime security.
The governor elaborated on the facilities that will accompany the maritime project, which include a ferry terminal building, passenger and cargo jetties, a hotel, cold storage facilities, a warehouse, and recreational areas. These developments are intended to establish Oron as a major gateway for coastal commerce, thereby expanding economic opportunities for local communities and aligning with the state’s economic diversification goals under the ARISE Agenda.
In a gesture of appreciation, the ferries will be named after former First Ladies of Akwa Ibom State, honoring their contributions to the state’s development. Governor Eno also mentioned ongoing infrastructure projects in the Oron area, including the completion of the Nsit Atai – Okobo – Oron Road and the rehabilitation of the 13.5km Okopedi – Uya Oro Road, which are expected to further enhance connectivity and accessibility.
As the state prepares for the upcoming 2027 general elections, Governor Eno announced that the All Progressives Congress Campaign Council will kick off its campaign activities with a prayer session on November 1, 2026, at the State’s International Christian Worship Centre in Uyo. He encouraged citizens and stakeholders to participate in the event, emphasizing the importance of seeking divine guidance for the success of the campaign.
In a related spiritual message, the General Overseer of Precious Faith International Church, Emmanuel Iniama, encouraged Christians to remain steadfast in their faith, assuring them that God’s presence would provide protection and success in their endeavors. The prayer service was attended by various dignitaries, including members of the State Executive Council, political leaders, and community members, reflecting a collective commitment to the state’s development and future.
The acquisition of the ferries and the accompanying infrastructure projects signal a strategic move by the Akwa Ibom State government to enhance its maritime capabilities, promote economic growth, and improve the quality of life for its residents.
