Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has called on voters in Rivers State to reject prominent opposition figures as they prepare for the 2027 general elections. Speaking at a town hall meeting in Ayama, Abua/Odual Local Government Area, Wike urged constituents to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid and other candidates endorsed by the Rainbow Coalition.
Wike characterized former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi as "political gamblers" lacking substantial plans for national development. He emphasized the importance of evaluating political leaders based on their past performance and ability to deliver tangible results, rather than their political ambitions or repeated attempts at the presidency.
“Do not trust your destiny to political gamblers,” Wike cautioned attendees, which included traditional leaders, party members, and community stakeholders. He argued that the electorate should prioritize candidates with a proven track record of service and development over those who merely seek office without a clear vision for the country’s future.
Wike specifically challenged Amaechi to showcase the contributions of his administration to the Abua/Odual area, asserting that voters should consider the actual development projects delivered in their communities when making electoral decisions. He contrasted the motivations behind the repeated presidential bids of some Nigerian politicians with those of historical figures like Abraham Lincoln, who pursued office with a clear national vision.
In his address, Wike also defended his own record as a former governor of Rivers State, urging residents to reflect on the projects and initiatives he implemented during his tenure. He expressed confidence in Tinubu’s administration, crediting it with stabilizing key economic sectors and restoring harmony in tertiary institutions.
As part of the Rainbow Coalition's mobilization efforts, Wike endorsed several candidates for the upcoming elections, including Kinsley Chinda for governor, Felix Obua for the Rivers West senatorial district, and Solomon Boss for the Abua/Odual-Ahoada East federal constituency, all representing the All Progressives Congress (APC). Additionally, he supported John Iderima, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the Abua/Odual state constituency.
Chinda praised Wike’s grassroots mobilization strategy, indicating that if elected, his administration would adopt a similar bottom-up approach to governance, ensuring that the voices of the people are heard in decision-making processes.
The meeting concluded with Professor Continue Eketu, representing Abua/Odual communities, commending Wike’s leadership and the development projects executed during his governorship. Eketu announced that the communities had resolved to support the candidates endorsed by the Rainbow Coalition in the upcoming elections, reinforcing Wike's call for unity and strategic voting in Rivers State.
