During former American Idol contestant Caleb Flynn’s brief time on the show, he credits his wife, Ashley Flynn, as the person who encouraged him to audition, stating “I love my wife more than anything.” Now, he’s accused of murdering her in their Tripp City, Ohio, home. She was found fatally shot in February.Caleb, 40, was arrested 82 hours later and charged with her murder. Caleb appeared on season 12 of the singing competition show in 2013, but never made it to the live rounds. His trial is set to begin on Thursday, September 17, after multiple delays.“Our family believes this arrest was made carefully and not without serious consideration. Here’s what to know about Ashley’s life and tragic death.Who Was Ashley Flynn?Ashley Flynn was born on February 28, 1988. She graduated from Tipp City High School in 2006 and attended Lee University in Cleveland, Tennessee, from which she graduated in 2010, according to her obituary. She met husband Caleb Flynn in college, and the pair married in 2010, according to People. The couple have two daughters, ages 10 and 12, whose names have not been made public.Ashley was a Tippecanoe Middle School volleyball coach, substitute teacher, and former full-time teacher, according to a Tipp City Schools Facebook post. “She was known for her beautiful smile, warmth, kindness, and the positive impact she had on so many—both in and out of the classroom and on the court,” the Tipp City Schools tribute read.She also worked as a teacher for LifeWise Academy, where she helped teach Bible-based education to public school students off-campus during school hours and volunteered at her church, Christian Life Center.Ashley’s obituary described her as a “shining light of joy to all who crossed her path, effortlessly encouraging others along the way.” Her life was tragically cut short on February 16, 2026 just days before her 38th birthday. She was pronounced dead in the Flynn family home in Tipp City.What Happened to Ashley Flynn?On the morning of February 16, Caleb reportedly found his wife unresponsive around 2:30 a.m. with gunshot wounds to her head. He placed a 911 call, claiming, “somebody broke into my home and killed my wife,” according to People. “Please, please hurry. … She's got three shots to her and blood everywhere.”At the time, he told dispatchers he was not sure if the intruder was still in the home. Ashley was pronounced dead at the scene with two gunshot wounds, and officers noted signs of forced entry into the home, according to the Dayton Daily News.Ultimately, police noted things were not adding up. In an affidavit filed in Miami County Municipal Court, Caleb alleged that the gun she was shot with was stolen from his 2024 Ford pickup truck. They also reported a large refrigerator was blocking the garage’s side door, adding “that would’ve had to be pushed to open the door.”The report also stated that he purposely led police astray “by the staging of the crime scene.” Both of the Flynn children were in the home at the time of the murder, as well as two dogs. Police reported the children were asleep and did not wake up.Where Is Caleb Flynn Now?On February 19, Caleb was arrested and accused of killing Ashley and staging an alleged burglary in their home. He’s currently being held in the Miami County Jail in Ohio on a $3.5 million bond.Caleb was indicted on 11 charges in March, including one count of aggravated murder, three counts of murder, two counts of felonious assault, three counts of tampering with evidence and two misdemeanor counts of intimidation of an attorney, victim or witness in a criminal case.On September 14, Judge Jeannine Pratt ruled that the media will be allowed to take photos and videos of all those who testify, with the exception of the Flynn children. Both daughters, who were in the home at the time of the murder, are expected to testify, and will do so via audio only, according to WDTN.Ashley’s father, mother, sister, and brother-in-law are also expected to testify.
