The Comet Is Coming, a pivotal force in the London jazz scene, is set to celebrate the tenth anniversary of their debut album, "Channel the Spirits," with an extensive reissue. This special edition, titled "Exploding in Slow Motion: the Complete Channel the Spirits Recordings 2013-2017CE," is scheduled for release on November 20 through Leaf.
This reissue not only includes the original album but also features the EPs "Prophecy" and "Death to the Planet," along with four previously unreleased tracks. Among these is "Late Night Party Jam 2," recorded at the Total Refreshment Centre, a venue that played a significant role in the band's early career and where they often performed as the unofficial house band.
Shabaka Hutchings, the band's saxophonist, reflected on the significance of the album in a recent press statement. He noted that while the album captures the essence of their initial experiences, it also represents the evolution of their sound and connection to audiences over time. He reminisced about the vibrant atmosphere of London during that period, recalling the energy of warehouse parties and packed nights at the Total Refreshment Centre.
The Comet Is Coming, which comprises Shabaka Hutchings, Danalogue, and Betamax, has been influential in shaping the modern jazz landscape in London since their inception. Their unique blend of jazz, electronic, and psychedelic sounds has garnered critical acclaim, including a nomination for the prestigious Mercury Prize.
In 2023, the group announced their split, a decision that came alongside the cancellation of their final concert in solidarity with the Palestinian cause. Following the disbandment, Shabaka Hutchings released his debut solo album, "Perceive Its Beauty, Acknowledge Its Grace," in 2024, further showcasing his artistic versatility.
The upcoming reissue promises to be a comprehensive collection for fans and newcomers alike, encapsulating the innovative spirit of The Comet Is Coming during a transformative era in London’s music scene. The tracklist for "Exploding in Slow Motion" includes fan favorites such as "Space Carnival," "Journey Through the Asteroid Belt," and "Final Days of the Apocalypse," featuring guest artist Joshua Idehen.
As anticipation builds for the release, listeners can already get a taste of the new material with "Late Night Party Jam 2," available for streaming. This track not only highlights the band's improvisational prowess but also serves as a nostalgic reminder of their energetic live performances.
The Comet Is Coming's reissue is more than just a celebration of their past; it is a testament to their lasting impact on the music world and a chance for fans to revisit the sounds that defined a decade in London jazz.
