Nineteen individuals were injured on Thursday when a minibus, transporting truck drivers, collided with a vehicle shuttle train at the French entrance of the Channel Tunnel, located near Calais. The incident led to a temporary suspension of shuttle services for approximately 90 minutes, causing significant disruption to cross-Channel traffic.
According to French authorities, the minibus was en route to the tunnel entrance when it veered off course and struck the side of the train. The regional administration reported that two individuals sustained serious injuries that are not life-threatening, while the remaining 17 passengers suffered minor injuries. Notably, the driver of the minibus was among those injured.
Emergency services responded swiftly to the scene, with around 200 personnel deployed to assist. While the shuttle services were halted for a short period, Eurostar passenger trains and freight services continued to operate without interruption.
Local official Agathe Cury provided updates to the media, confirming that the injured individuals were of various nationalities, and that their respective consulates had been informed. However, she did not disclose specific details regarding their countries of origin. All those injured were men and were traveling in the minibus at the time of the crash.
The cause of the collision remains unclear, and an investigation has been initiated to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. Cury noted that this was the first recorded crash at the loading area for the vehicle shuttle trains under the Channel Tunnel, which has been operational since 1994. The tunnel is a vital transportation link, having carried 3.4 million vehicles last year, along with millions of Eurostar passengers.
As authorities continue to investigate, the incident raises concerns about safety protocols at the busy tunnel entrance, which serves as a critical transit point between France and the United Kingdom. The Channel Tunnel, known for its efficiency and reliability, has not experienced such an accident in its history, making this event particularly noteworthy.
The local community and transport authorities are likely to monitor the situation closely as more information becomes available. Meanwhile, the injured individuals are receiving medical attention, and their recovery is being prioritized by healthcare providers in the region.
