Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji was inaugurated for a second term on October 16, 2026, marking a historic moment as he becomes the first governor in the state to secure back-to-back re-election. The ceremony took place at the Ekiti Parapo Pavilion in Ado Ekiti and was attended by numerous dignitaries, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima.
In his inaugural address, Governor Oyebanji expressed gratitude to the people of Ekiti for their renewed mandate, stating that it presents an opportunity to intensify efforts in delivering effective governance. He emphasized the importance of building on the progress made during his first term, aiming to ensure that the benefits of governance are felt in every household across the state.
The Governor called for unity and collaboration among all citizens, both within Nigeria and in the diaspora, to transform Ekiti into a model of governance. He acknowledged the significant challenges ahead but assured the public of his commitment to remain accessible, listen to their concerns, and work collaboratively across political and social divides.
During the ceremony, the oath of office was administered by the State Chief Judge, Honourable Justice Adekanye Ogunmoye, with the First Lady, Prof Olayemi Oyebanji, in attendance. The newly re-elected Deputy Governor, Chief (Mrs) Monisade Afuye, was also sworn in shortly before Oyebanji.
In his speech, Oyebanji paid tribute to his predecessors, recognizing their contributions to the state's development. He extended a hand of fellowship to his opponents from the recent gubernatorial elections, promoting a spirit of cooperation for the betterment of Ekiti.
The Governor highlighted the achievements of his first term, particularly in infrastructure, healthcare, and education, attributing these successes to the support of President Tinubu. He urged the people to leverage the upcoming 2027 presidential election to renew the mandate for Tinubu and Shettima, emphasizing the importance of their continued leadership for the future of Ekiti.
Oyebanji outlined his vision for the next four years, which includes a focus on technology, innovation, and education that aligns with the needs of a changing economy. He stressed the need to empower women, young people, and individuals with disabilities, ensuring that every segment of the population can contribute to the state's growth.
In his remarks, Vice President Shettima conveyed President Tinubu's confidence in Oyebanji's ability to fulfill the expectations of the Ekiti people during his second term. He described the inauguration as the beginning of a new era of service and assured the public that Oyebanji would not betray their trust.
The inauguration was attended by a host of dignitaries, including governors from various states, members of the National Assembly, traditional rulers, and other notable figures. The event underscored the collective commitment to advancing the interests of Ekiti State and its citizens.
As Governor Oyebanji embarks on this new term, he faces the dual challenge of meeting the expectations of the electorate while navigating the complexities of governance in a fluctuating economic landscape. His administration's success will depend on its ability to implement practical solutions that address the needs of the people and foster a prosperous future for Ekiti State.
