Residents of Plateau State with roots in Benue have rallied behind Mike Kaase Aondoakaa, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and the governorship candidate for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), in his quest to unseat the incumbent Governor Hyacinth Alia in the upcoming 2027 elections. This endorsement was publicly announced during a recent visit to Jessica Aondoakaa, the former deputy chairman of Ushongo Local Government Area and wife of the gubernatorial candidate.
The gathering took place in Jos, where members of the Central Planning Committee (CPC) outlined preparations for Aondoakaa’s scheduled visit to the Benue community in Plateau on October 31, 2026. The attendees expressed confidence in Aondoakaa’s extensive experience in public service, highlighting his previous roles as Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice as key qualifications for addressing the pressing issues facing Benue State, particularly poverty and economic challenges.
Douglas Achala, the Chief of Igede on the Plateau, emphasized the need for effective leadership to tackle the economic difficulties faced by the Benue people. He pointed out that the diverse ethnic groups within Benue State must unite to support a leader who prioritizes development and the well-being of all communities. Achala’s remarks resonated with the sentiments of other community leaders, including Peter Amede, the President of the Idoma people on the Plateau, who underscored Aondoakaa’s proven track record in public service.
Amede expressed optimism that Aondoakaa’s governance would address the myriad challenges confronting Benue State, urging for a unified front among the Benue populace. He called for a leader who would focus on the welfare of the people, combat poverty, and foster economic growth.
Prof. Emmanuel Hemba, who chairs the CPC, praised Aondoakaa’s initiative in establishing a rice-processing industry, noting that it came at a time when the demand for locally produced rice was surging. Hemba articulated the urgent need for purposeful leadership to revitalize economic activities, strengthen local industries, and create job opportunities for residents. “Benue people are suffering and need someone who can take them out of poverty,” he stated, reaffirming the community's belief in Aondoakaa’s capability to provide the necessary leadership.
The sentiments of unity and development were echoed by the president of the Idoma, who highlighted the expectation for a government that acknowledges the contributions of various communities and ensures equitable development across the state. He expressed confidence that Aondoakaa’s leadership could help reposition Benue State towards sustainable development.
Jessica Aondoakaa, in her remarks, reflected on her husband’s journey, attributing his rise to prominence to divine timing and purpose. She emphasized that Aondoakaa’s educational background and experiences have equipped him with the leadership qualities essential for effective governance. Furthermore, she expressed her commitment to serve as a liaison between the Benue community in Plateau and her husband, ensuring that their concerns are adequately communicated.
Jessica also stressed the importance of accessibility, effective communication, and a willingness to listen as vital leadership qualities. She expressed confidence in her husband’s ability to embody these attributes, urging the community to finalize arrangements for his upcoming visit, which she hopes will serve as a platform for further planning and coordination.
As the 2027 governorship election approaches, the support from the Benue community in Plateau State for Aondoakaa underscores a collective desire for transformative leadership capable of addressing the socio-economic challenges facing the region. The upcoming visit on October 31 is anticipated to further galvanize support and foster a sense of unity among the Benue people as they prepare for the electoral contest.
